3 Places To Travel That Are Like Iceland But Way Cheaper

Iceland is home to a stunning array of picturesque sites, including glaciers, fjords and over 30 active volcanoes. And that’s not even to mention the geothermal spas or the Aurora Borealis, which you might get lucky enough to see in the star-studded sky. But Iceland isn’t the cheapest place to visit. A one-week trip for two costs around $3,551, and that’s only accounting for food, accommodation, sightseeing and local transport. Even if you do go there, you’ll likely have to either rent a car (a whole other cost of its own) or buy a paid tour package just to get around.

1. Orkney Islands, Scotland

If you’re mainly traveling for those picturesque landscapes, check out the Orkney archipelago. Located on the northeastern coast of Scotland, these remote islands are steeped in history. You’ll get the chance to explore Neolithic monuments and ancient cathedrals. There’s also plenty of idyllic coastline where you can take it all in or simply let your mind wander. And if you’re worried about missing out on the Northern Lights, don’t be. You can often see them in the fall and winter months.

2. Oslo, Norway

Norway has so many beautiful natural sites worth visiting, including awe-inspiring fjords like the Geirangerfjord and the Nærøyfjord. If you want to stick to a bigger city, Oslo’s got plenty going for it. From museums and parks like the Vigelandsparken to the Norwegian Royal Palace, you’ve got options. You can also make the capital your home base while venturing further out to the beach or minor archipelagos at Sandefjord. While you’re there, don’t forget to try traditional Norwegian food like lefse (soft flatbread) or fiskekaker (fish cakes).

3. Helsingborg, Sweden

A trip to Sweden is bound to cost less than Iceland, though it always depends on factors like where you’re flying from and your goals once you’re there. But if you’re looking for a fairly similar place that costs less, Helsingborg is worth a visit.Located not far from Denmark, this coastal city has many interesting sites. If you’re mostly visiting for architecture and history, there’s the old part of town and ancient cathedrals like Mariakyrkan. There are also lots of local shops and cafes for those more leisurely days out.And if you’re the active sort, Helsingborg has plenty of walking and cycling trails.
